Currently, the common tasks
on smartphones such as watching
videos, pictures, web surfing... 4K resolution display seems to be wasteful,
but it’s the basis for virtual reality technology’s development. A few months
ago, Sony has introduced the first smartphone using 4K resolution display of
the world. However, because the battery technology has not developed so the
Japanese manufacturer only allows their flagship to display 4K when watching
high-quality videos and images. With other normal tasks such as web surfing,
the screen of this smartphone will only display Full HD.
Recently, a group of
researchers has combined with a manufacturer to successfully study a new
technology which allows smartphone’s screen to display
easily a 4K resolution content in a stable frame speed of
30 pfs. The unexpected thing is not only because this is an software
engineering, but also because it does not consume much power thereby ensuring
battery life for mobile devices. Researchers can even increase the frame speed
to 60 fps when using this new technology. This could be a solution for smartphones manufacturers to consider
the assurance of battery life on smartphone with high resolution screen. This
tecchnology, however, has been developed since 2012. The Japanese manufacturer
perfected it so it can work operation in real time mode by software without
upgrading the hardware. It also means that when this technology is popular, smartphones of our time can display
video and image in 4K quality instead of changing to another 4K smartphone
which is really good for the users’ budget. This unique technology paves the
way to the quality content can 4K popular on mobile devices. While with the
common tasks on smartphones like
watching videos, pictures, web surfing, 4K resolution seems to be superfluous
but it is a prerequisite for the development of virtual reality technology.
However, the reseachers also have a big ambition: they will not ignore the most
exciting markets of the world: smart devices such as smartphones and tablets. When we use a smartphone or tablet is
almost the largest energy consumption belongs to the touchscreen and backlight.
With new technology configured in separated layers, it can significantly reduce
power consumption to display and keep the devices running all week.
